KTE – A fresh approach to annual training
How can mandatory safety training be modernised? A revised module was developed for Kerntechnische Entsorgung Karlsruhe GmbH that combines real-life footage and AI avatars in a single format.

Company profile – “Kerntechnische Entsorgung Karlsruhe GmbH (KTE)”
KTE is responsible for the decommissioning of decommissioned nuclear research and prototype facilities at the KIT Campus Nord site. In addition, the company is responsible for the proper disposal of the nuclear waste generated in the process.
The sole shareholder of KTE is the federally owned company EWN Entsorgungswerk für Nuklearanlagen GmbH, which is responsible nationwide for tasks relating to the decommissioning and disposal of nuclear facilities.
Inital situation
All KTE employees must successfully complete the annual training course each year. This course consists of four modules. It was jointly decided to modernise these modules in stages. In 2025, we began with ‘Operations K1’. Its content needed to be updated. In addition, the navigation was to be made clearer and more user-friendly.
The high proportion of specialist content presented a particular challenge. All relevant stakeholders were involved right from the first phase of the project, which meant that different perspectives and detailed technical requirements had to be taken into account. Despite the volume of feedback, the central objective remained clear throughout: to deliver a training programme that was easy to understand, well-structured and practical for all staff.
Solution
In collaboration with the KTE team, the ‘Business Studies K1’ module has been completely redesigned in terms of content, structure and teaching methods.
Learners are guided through the module by three characters:
- Lisa will be hosting the event and guiding everyone through it.
- As an expert, Lukas explains complex technical topics in a way that is easy to understand.
- Simon guides participants through real-life situations as a member of staff on site.
A key feature of the project was the use of AI avatars: Lisa and Lukas were brought to life as digital characters. To ensure maximum authenticity, additional filming took place with an actor on the KTE site itself. Real-life working environments and facilities provide a strong practical focus and allow participants to experience safety-related situations first-hand. The module combines AI-led facilitation, expert knowledge, real-life on-site scenes and interactive elements to create a varied and modern learning experience.
Result
The result is a modern, interactive training module with a clear structure and streamlined navigation. Learners can interactively click their way through the individual systems, familiarise themselves with alarm sounds and view assembly points. Real-life scenarios enhance the relevance to everyday working life. To successfully complete the module, learners must pass a compulsory quiz.
