BILLA – Understanding medical devices. Living safety.

Compulsory training reimagined: practical e-learning on medical devices in commerce.

Company profile:

BILLA is one of Austria’s leading retail companies and part of the REWE Group. In addition to food, BILLA also sells medical products – from plasters and cough syrups to blood pressure monitors. This makes it all the more important to have reliable, up-to-date knowledge about how to use these products.

Inital situation

Even before the project started, there was an internal e-learning course on medical devices, but it was getting a bit old: the content wasn’t totally up to date, there were no speakers, and it didn’t really relate to real life. Plus, it’s a mandatory training course that has to be repeated every year. So, it was a big challenge to make sure the content was not only correct but also kept people interested over the long term. BILLA’s wish was clear: the training should be made more lively, more practical and brought up to date in terms of content. The existing training served as the basis for the revision.

Solution

Together with the contact persons at BILLA, the clickandlearn team developed a modern, two-part e-learning solution:

  • Basic module: Medical devices
  • Refresher module on medical devices

Working closely together, we developed two modules that are consistently geared towards the everyday work of employees. We were particularly pleased with the customer’s openness to our didactic suggestions – such as limiting the content of the refresher module to the essential points.

Result

The new training programme imparts knowledge relevant to medical devices in a clear, practical and sustainable manner. Employees know:

  • what medical devices are,
  • what to bear in mind when handling medical devices,
  • how to deal with complaints

and why this knowledge is crucial in everyday working life. The combination of scenarios, videos and micro-learning ensures that the topic is taken seriously without coming across as dry.

Our Highlights

A key highlight is the final quiz: instead of traditional single or multiple-choice questions, videos with realistic work scenarios are used. Learners must actively recognise when a mistake is made and mark it by clicking on a stop button. If the mistake is not recognised, an explanation follows.

The big advantage: the video must be watched attentively and it is not possible to simply click through. This format represents a conscious further development of the typical sequence ‘watch video → answer question’ and can help to promote attention.

The refresher module is also a real highlight:
the content has been reduced to the most essential points and implemented as compact micro-learning – ideal for annual revision.

  • New scenarios instead of repetition
  • Increased difficulty level in the quiz
  • In addition to detecting errors, it is also necessary to explain what was done incorrectly and why.

This not only tests knowledge, but also promotes genuine understanding.

What excites us about this project

‘This project demonstrates how compulsory training can be made exciting: practical, interactive and with real educational value. We were particularly impressed by Billa’s openness to trusting our creative and educational implementation proposals. This is not a given, but it is hugely effective for learners.’

customer statement

“The collaboration on this medical device project has resulted in two well-designed and practical e-learning courses that are both technically convincing and motivating. Thanks to the combination of interactive video quizzes and a compact refresher module, we were able to present complex content in a clear, understandable and varied way. The creative scenarios and fresh ideas from clickandlearn were particularly valuable, making the training noticeably more lively and practical. The result is a learning programme that really engages the target group, facilitates the transfer to everyday work and brings the learning material to life.”
