What are the Multiple Intelligences?*
In 1983, Howard Gardner (a professor at Harvard) determined that there are 7 ways that students learn. Below is the list and a short explanation of each of the Multiple Intelligences.
1) Verbal/Linguistic: We learn when we hear. We also learn when we read out loud or recite out loud. By whispering the Click and Learn answers as you click, you are both Saying AND Hearing. This is also why we encourage you to "recite all 50 states in 50 seconds."
2) Logical/Mathematical: If information is presented in a logical order, it is easier to learn. We present the 50 States and countries of the world in Alphabetical order. As the student is racing the clock to click the answer, they are thinking "what state is next in the alphabet." This helps them learn and remember.
3) Visual/Spatial: Visual stimulus (pictures, images, graphs) help us learn. Click and Learn uses pictures or maps extensively. Animation is used when possible. Intense and contrasting colors are also used. Click and Learn helps students develop a Mental Map of the USA, the World, their state or bones of the body. Our Flahscard games were created to enhance this learning style.
4) Bodily/Kinesthetic Intelligence: There is a connection between our hands and our brain. Repetitive motion helps us learn. With the Click and Learn games students are remembering the pattern that they used to click the answers. They are also using their adrenaline because they are racing the clock to win the game. This is also why we provide the blank paper maps for testing - it is important for the student to "write" the answers on paper - several times if necessary.
5) Musical/Rhythmic Intelligence: This is the capacity to think to music, to be able to hear patterns, recognize them, and perhaps manipulate them. Click and Learn does not use this Multiple Intelligence in our games and drills.
6) Interpersonal Intelligence: Some students learn best in a group or with a friend. We make use of this concept several ways: 1) In a computer lab, it is good to let your students interact with each other as they use the computer. You will notice that they challenge each other and brag about their speed. 2) Have students work in pairs and "time" each other as they recite the 50 states. Students take turns timing each other. 3) After you are sure that a student can recite the 50 states, call on them one by one in class and have them recite. They CAN do it and they are excited to be an equal in the class as they recite.
7) Intrapersonal Intelligence: "Intra-Personal" means "inside yourself." Almost every computer application (particularly educational games) helps the student develop their intrapersonal intelligence. They are working at their own speed without outside pressure.
"Triple Coding": If students can use 3 or more of the Multiple Intelligences simultaneously, they will dramatically increase the speed with which they learn. In a computer lab setting, Click and Learn uses SIX of the Multiple Intelligences simultaneously.
